Federal Relations

Submitted by: Andrew Harvey and Jenny Sadler, Committee Co-Chairs

Hello from UMBC and Garrett College! Andrew Harvey and I are your Federal Relations Co-Chairs for 2017-2018 and plans for our Committee's annual advocacy efforts are already well underway.

Our main event is the annual Hill Visit, during which Committee members meet with staffers from the offices of members of the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions and the US House Committee on Education and the Workforce to share our 'from the trenches' insight and experiences as front-line Financial Aid Administrators. Our advocacy efforts are geared towards giving Congress a deeper understanding of the potential long-term impacts of FSA policy, and reminding legislators that we are locally accessible sources of information and guidance who are committed to acting in the best interest of the students we (and they) serve.

We are planning our 2017 Hill Visit for Wednesday, October 25th. As in past years, we will be preparing a position piece to share with Congressional staffers both in-person and electronically. However, our piece this year will be both shorter in length and include more visual aides, giving us more time for meaningful personal conversations during our 20-30 minute visits. Additionally, we are looking to further strengthen our message by including current students and young alumni in our group this year. It's our goal that hearing about the experiences of financial aid recipients, both during enrollment and as they begin repaying their loans, will be enlightening for our audience, and will further their understanding that policy has impacts that reach far beyond administrative burden on Financial Aid Professionals.

So, where do we go from here? First and foremost, we need your input! If you are not already on the Federal Relations Committee and are interested in serving, please contact Jennifer Sandler (jgs@umbc.edu) or Andrew Harvey (andrew.harvey@garrettcollege.edu) to be added to our distribution list. Let us know, too, if you are not on the Committee, but are interested in attending the Hill Visit on 10/25 or, if you are working with any students you feel might be interested in and well-suited to join us in DC for our day of advocacy. If participating in the Committee and/or the Hill Visit isn't a commitment you can make right now, but you have an issue or concern that you'd like to see addressed as part of our efforts, please feel free to let us know that, too!

Andrew and I are looking forward to collaborating with you this year to advocate for our students!
