Senior Financial Aid Counselor OR Assistant Director, Financial Assistance - (220001DM)

  

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine - Office of Student Affairs is seeking a Sr. Financial Aid Counselor or Assistant Director of Financial Aid and Wellness to serve as the point person for financial aid/ wellness for the medical students.

SOM Senior Financial Aid Counselor Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist students and parents with financial aid application requirements.
  • Counsel students and parents in all aspects of financial aid and explains financial aid eligibility.
  • Respond to inquiries and questions to ensure understanding of the financial aid process.
  • Counsel students when their enrollment status changes.
  • Work on special projects as needed.
  • Assist the Director of Student Financial Planning to present financial aid information to current and prospective medical students.
  • Functions as a liaison between the University Financial Aid Office and the SOM Financial Aid Office and the Student Financial Services to resolve errors, conflicts to ensure the timely processing of financial aid funds.
  • Works with the University Financial Aid Office to advise students on revised awards, changes to enrollment and aggregate student loan limits.
  • Meet with students to create accounts in AAMC/Medloans.
  • Meets with students to review the cost of attendance and assist with managing the indirect cost.
  • Works closely with the School of Medicine Director of Financial Wellness on debt management programs for students.
  • Communicate with students on regular basis using a variety of commination tools.
  • Work closely with the School of Medicine Admissions Office to prepare and present to incoming students on the financial aid application process and funding options.
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, and institutional policies.
  • Perform one-on-one student loan exit counseling sessions for the students who are in their last year of education.
  • Assist the Director of Student Financial Planning in all matters related to the School of Medicine students’ financial aid and financial wellness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.  

 

SOM Assistant Director of Financial Aid and Financial Wellness Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage the daily operations of the SOM Financial aid office.
  • Serve in place of the Director of Student Financial Planning when necessary.
  • Assist the Director of Student Financial Planning in all matters related to the School of Medicine students’ financial aid and financial wellness.
  • Assist students and parents with financial aid application requirements.
  • Counsel students and parents in all aspects of financial aid and explains financial aid eligibility.
  • Respond to inquiries and questions to ensure understanding of the financial aid process.
  • Counsel students when their enrollment status changes.
  • Work on special projects as needed including phone and email outreach to students on various financial aid and financial wellness topics, processes, deadlines, and more.
  • Present financial aid information to current and prospective medical students.
  • Functions as a liaison between the University Financial Aid Office and the SOM Financial Aid Office and the Student Financial Services to resolve errors, conflicts to ensure the timely processing of financial aid funds.
  • Works with the University Financial Aid Office to advise students on revised awards, changes to enrollment and aggregate student loan limits.
  • Meet with students to create accounts in AAMC/Medloans, to review the cost of attendance and assist with managing the indirect cost.
  • Work very closely with the School of Medicine Director of Financial Planning on debt management programs for students.
  • Communicate with students on regular basis using a variety of commination tools and send out weekly communications to students on various financial aid and financial wellness topics
  • Work closely with the School of Medicine Admissions Office to prepare and present to incoming students on the financial aid application process and funding options.
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, and institutional policies.
  • Assist the Director of Student Financial Planning with the SOM Donor Scholarship recipient identification on yearly basis.
  • Demonstrate strong ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision
  • Maintain operational guidelines, job aids, training materials for financial aid and wellness, and keep website content current.
  • Serve as support to the Office of Student Affairs team when needed.
  • Perform one-on-one student loan exit counseling sessions for the students who are in their last year of education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 

Qualifications

  

Senior Financial Aid Counselor Qualifications:


Education: Bachelor’s Degree Required.


Experience: Three (3) years of experience in a financial aid office.


Supervisory Experience: Prior supervisory experience preferred.


Other: Related experience may be substituted for education.


Current knowledge of Title IV and Title VII financial aid programs. Knowledge of how state programs integrate with federal and institutional funding.


Clery act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and will comply with Clery Act requirements.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


Knowledge of federal and state financial aid regulations, familiarity with UMB policies and procedures. Must be able to perform problem analysis. Ability to interpret federal, state, and institutional rules and regulations, policies, and procedures, and to exercise skilled professional judgment as needed to ensure that applicants and students are given the appropriate aid resources. Ability to interpret University policies regarding application of financial aid, payment of tuition, housing, and other charges. Must possess effective communication skills, computer expertise and excellent presentation skills. Ability to demonstrate customer service excellence is required. Experience in School of Medicine financial aid and Banner is preferred.   Attention to detail, good mathematical and analytical skills, ability to resolve conflicts are desired. Ability to provide excellent oral and written communication with diverse individuals is highly desirable. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision is preferred. Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point is required.

Preferred Hiring Standards:
Understanding of medical education or health related education is desired but not required. Strong excel skills desired.

Experience: Four (4) years of experience in a financial aid office with two (2) years of independent work at a senior financial aid counselor level.


Supervisory Experience: Prior Supervisory experience  providing direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring work of others is preferred.  


Other: Thorough knowledge of Title IV and Title VII financial aid programs.


Knowledge of how state programs integrate with federal and institutional funding.

Hiring Ranges: Commensurate with education and experience


Counselor, Financial Aid Senior: $60,000 - $65,000


Assistant Director, Financial Assistance: $65,000 - $70,000
